Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Ajisth’s MomStyle. Today I’m going to talk about a 100% natural remedy for cough, cold and Nasal congestion, called Nasobuddy Cough and Cold Balm.
Coughs, colds, nasal congestion are all too common in this winter season. It’s been especially longer and colder this year. Cold rubs/balms also known as vapor rubs, are usually one of the essentials in our baby’s medical kit.
However, did you know that not all baby rubs are safe for your baby?
Like every other baby product, we need to look deep into the ingredients to ensure what’s advertised as safe and harmless is, in fact, safe for our baby.
What are Vapor Rubs?
Vapor rubs are topical ointments that are used to relieve congestion, cough, and cold. They are known to create a calm soothing effect, help ease nasal congestion and aid breathing.
Are vapo rubs safe?
Studies state that well-known brands of vapor rubs can be dangerous and have caused respiratory issues in children.
Dr.Bruce Robin, a pediatrician and researcher from USA, studied the side effects Vicks Vapor rub on young children, said
Some of the ingredients in Vicks, notably the menthol, trick the brain into thinking that it is easier to breathe by triggering a cold sensation, which is processed as indicating more airflow,” he said. “Vicks may make you feel better, but it can’t help you breathe better.
“This may be of little physiologic consequence in older children and adults, but in infants and small children, this potentially can lead to respiratory distress.”
These following ingredients are found in commercial vapor rubs , they are undesirable and outright harmful to babies.
Fragrances:
Artificial fragrances are a major lung irritants and can worsen the baby’s condition. Some of the commonly available baby rubs contain these fragrances as their main ingredient.
Camphor :
Camphor is another ingredient that you should avoid at any cost. Studies confirm various toxic side effects of using Camphor on small children. Therefore, proper care should be taken to keep balms containing camphor out of the reach of children.
Methanol/Menthol :
Methanol is the reason why these commercial vapor rubs dub us into thinking they actually work. Methanol, when applied on the skin, creates a cooling effect which tricks our brain into thinking that the airways are clear.
Studies show that Methanol does not really increase the air flow to the lungs, so there is no real benefit. And when it comes to babies and young children, Methanol can cause adverse effects on children by increasing inflammation and mucus secretion.
I have completely avoided using the common, commercially available rubs and turned to a more natural alternative with really baby safe ingredients.
Nasobuddy Cough & Cold balm
This balm is based on an Ayurvedic formulation with six essential oil ingredients of dill leaf, eucalyptus, chamomile, lavender, patchouli and coriander.
Some facts about these ingredients :
Dill leaf essential oil –
Dill leaf Essential oil contains natural antihistamines, which are anticongestive and help in clearing the respiratory system. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, properties that boosts immunity. Dill oil promotes good sleep and reduces stress. A restful sleep allows the immune system to fight against colds. Stress decreases the body’s ability to stay healthy, especially, in the cold and flu season.
Chamomile Essential oil –
Chamomile is a very gentle herb that children really respond to well. It is a high source of antioxidants, strong anti-inflammatory, relieves muscle spasm and promotes healing. Chamomile is most helpful for its relaxing effects, helping with sleep problems, as well as anxiety associated with cough and congestion.
Patchouli Essential oil –
Patchouli has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. What sets Patchouli oil apart from other herbal oils is that it gets better with age. With it’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, it helps to bolster immunity to help fight colds, influenza and tonsillitis.
Eucalyptus Essential oil –
The perfect choice to help relieve cough, break up phlegm and clear up congestion. The eucalyptus vapor loosens the mucus from the chest and helps in expelling it. It also helps with sinus symptoms and nasal congestion.
Lavender Essential oil –
A calming agent and a sleep aid .It helps to reduce anxiety, stress, relax the muscles and settle into a restful nights sleep.
Coriander Essential oil –
Rich in immune-boosting antioxidants. Coriander offers several antioxidants, which prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals. Its antioxidants have been shown to fight inflammation in the body. It also contains antimicrobial compounds that help fight common infections .
How to use the Nasobuddy balm?
It’s pretty simple, just apply the balm liberally on the chest and neck. For best effects massage the Nasobuddy balm on the bottom of the feet, from toes to the heels. It increases absorption of the immune boosting essential oils. Massaging stimulates the respiratory system, helps in relieving cough & congestion.
My personal experience with the balm has been very good. It has a calming influence, helped relieve congestion and most importantly helped with a sound sleep.
